Description including Unit Aims

This unit comprise the following:

Engineering Geology
To develop students' knowledge, understanding and skills in the area of Engineering Geology.

Soil Mechanics
To enable students to gain a sound grasp of the fundamentals of soil material behaviour. To introduce students to some methods of Geotechnical Analysis.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, successful students will

ULO 1. Be able to explain the fundamental and principles of Engineering Geology; (PLO A2)

ULO 2. Be able to explain the basic principles of the seepage in soils, effective stresses, shear and compression behaviour of soils; (PLO A2)

ULO 3. Apply the basic principles of the seepage in soils, Mohr’s circle, stress paths, effective stresses, shear and compression behaviour of soils to solve simple geotechnical problems;

(PLO A2)

ULO 4. Be able to devise mathematical models of simple geotechnical problems; (PLO A1)

ULO 5. Be able to apply some methods of Geotechnical Analysis to solve simple problems for two-dimensional flow in soils, slope stability and earth retaining structures (PLO B5)

Teaching Information

Geology:

10 hours of lectures; 10 hours of practical classes.
Half-day local field trip

Soil Mechanics:

20 hours of lectures
20 hours of example classes
3 hours laboratory work

Assessment Information

The Engineering Geology content is assessed by a 1 hour exam in January and the Soil Mechanics 2 content is assessed by a 3 hour exam in the summer. The percentage marks from each exam will be combined in the proportion of the credit points.
