Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will take place in Year 3 and will comprise the following three Elements and their general aims:

Restorative Skills Year 3

To produce a student who will have acquired sufficient knowledge and skill to describe how dentures are made and to enable them to commence clinical prosthetic dentistry. They should be able to assess a patient, define a treatment plan and bring the stages of the treatment plan to a successful conclusion.

To provide students with the biological and clinical knowledge underpinning operative dentistry and endodontics so that they will have acquired the skills to enable them to enter the clinical teaching program and be able to chart accurately, diagnose simple dental pathology and formulate a treatment plan. In addition, they should be able to treat patients requiring routine operative dentistry and endodontic procedures.

Orthodontic Skills Year 3

To give undergraduates a knowledge of biological and mechanical principles underlying orthodontic treatment and provide them with basic skills in removable appliance construction.

Oral and Dental Radiography Year 3: Intra-Oral

To provide the foundations for the undergraduate to undertake and interpret intra-oral dental radiographs.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • the consequences of tooth loss and the anatomy in relation to prosthetic dentistry.
  • the ways in which missing teeth can be replaced and their relative merits.
  • the principles of crown preparation techniques for the restoration of a tooth.
  • the process of production of radiographic images, the hazards of radiation, the principles of dose reduction, the protection of patients and health care personnel, and legislation appropriate to practise dental radiography in general dental practice.

The student should acquire the skills and attributes necessary for:

  • Restoring the dentition using the principle of minimal intervention, to a standard that promotes the longevity of the restoration.
  • Managing restorative procedures that preserve tooth structure, replace missing or defective tooth structure, maintain function, are aesthetic and long lasting, and promote soft and hard tissue health
  • Determining the prognosis and undertaking appropriate non-surgical treatments to manage pulpal and periradicular disease for uncomplicated permanent teeth.
  • Assessing a partially dentate patient, defining a treatment plan and bringing the stages of the prosthetic treatment plan to a successful conclusion.
  • Assessing the need for, designing and prescribing biomechanically sound partial dentures
  • Making an Adams clasps, labial bow and palatal cantilever spring from stainless steel wire.
  • Laying down a base plate and finishing & polishing the cured acrylic.
  • Undertaking intra-oral radiography and DPT views.
  • Undertaking a dental charting, formulating a treatment plan and maintaining accurate patient notes.

Assessment Information

Restorative Skills Year 3

This would contribute a total of 60% to Unit mark. MCQ tests in Prosthetic Dentistry throughout term 3.1 to give Formative and Summative data and contribute 5% to a final Element mark.

E-Assessment for Prosthetic dentistry and Operative / Endo that would be summative and contribute 45% to Element mark. Completed at end of Term 3.1

Practical assessment at the end of term 3.1 that would involve simulated clinical work and contribute 40% to final Element mark.

Practical assessment at end of term 3.2 which is formative and summative. Students are required to individually treatment plan and design an RPD. 5% towards Element mark.

Question in the Year 3 OSCE in Term 3.3 that would assess ability in accurate dental charting. This would contribute 5% of the marks for this Element.

Orthodontic Skills Year 3

This Element would contribute 10% to final Unit Assessment. MSA at the end of term 3.1. Summative Assessment contributing 40% to end of term Element mark.

Continuous Assessment of practical work during term 3.1. This is both formative and summative with the mark contributing 20% to the end of term Element assessment.

Practical exam at end of term 3.1. This is summative assessment where students make an URA. It contributes 40% towards the end of term element assessment.

This Element would contribute 30% to final Unit mark. E-Assessment (IRMER schedule 2 exam) at end of term 3.1. Summative assessment contributing 40% towards Element mark.

Practical exam during term 3.3. Summative exam involving taking an intra-oral radiograph unaided. Contributes 50% to Element assessment.

OSCE stations during term 3.3 on radiographic faults and interpreting intra-oral films. Summative exam contributing 10% to element assessment.

E-assessment on intra-oral radiography. Formative only and is standard set. Term 3.3.
