Students will develop a deeper understanding around the aetiology, management and treatment of dental caries and periodontal disease. Emphasis will be placed on the dental care of the adult poulation, including the treatment and management of root caries, advanced tooth wear. These subjects are interlinked with the study of caries prevention, oral health promotion and education all of which are assessed at a theoretical and practical level throughout the course.
• To have an understanding of which special tests may be used in the diagnosis of diseases of the periodontium
• When and how to use the appropriate radiographic examination and how to interpret the results
• Root surface management in periodontal diseases and the healing of inflammatory lesions following treatment
• To understand the relationship between periodontology and conservative dentistry, and how fillings, crowns and bridges may adversely affect the periodontal tissues
• To understand periodontal diseases occurring in children, including acute herpetic gingivostomatitis
• gingivitis artefactar and early onset periodontitis
• The reasons for, and prevention of, management of tooth substance loss
• The role of antimicrobial drugs in the treatment of periodontal diseases
• The importance of maintaining periodontal health in the ageing population and an awareness of the oral hygiene needs of the terminally ill
• The management of patients who are HIV positive, and the need to refer such patients for specialist treatment
• The periodontal and oral manifestations of HIV disease and their significance
• To understand which drugs may affect the periodontal tissues or influence the type of periodontal treatment which may need to be carried out.
• The need for maintenance following periodontal treatment and how to design maintenance programmes to suit the individual patient
• The need for maintenance, hygiene and scaling procedures around osseintegrated implants.
