Description including Unit Aims

Lecturers: Sidharth Jaggi and Andrew Booker

The aims of this unit are to:

  • Provide students with hands on, yet rigorous, understanding to the properties, use and manipulation of matrices
  • Provide the students with an intuitive geometrical, yet deep, understanding of linear algebra.
  • Allow students to link matrix theory to multivariate statistical linear modelling
  • Allow students to identify and formulate practical problems as linear models and solve them numerically on a computer
  • Provide students with knowledge of numerical and complexity issues, allowing them to make informed choices
  • Allow students to interpret results statistically and draw conclusions when applied to real datasets.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the unit, the students should be able:

  • To work fluently with matrix algebra (products, inverses, solving linear systems, eigenvalues and eigenvectors)
  • To choose an adequate method based on numerical or complexity issues
  • To solve linear equations both on paper and numerically using R/C++
  • To identify and formulate practical problems as linear models
  • To work with the multivariate normal distribution
  • To apply statistical procedure to check modelling assumptions
  • To interpret results.

Assessment Information

2 x 40% Examinations (in the exam period at the end of each teaching block) and 20% Coursework / Computer Practicals

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.
