Description including Unit Aims

This unit is in Year 5 of the BDS programme and aims to develop student skills in clinical dentistry. The Unit aims to expand the student’s experience in the management of patients within a range of clinical dental treatment settings. At the end of the Unit students should be able to supervise and manage the treatment of patients under their care to the level of proficiency required at the start of Dental Foundation Training.

The unit is comprised of five elements:

  • Restorative Dentistry Year 5
  • Basic Oral Surgery Year 5
  • Child Dental Health Year 5
  • Community Based Dental Teaching Year 5

The majority of the learning within the Unit occurs during supervised treatment sessions where the student communicates with, and carries out, prescribed treatment for patients of all ages with staff guidance.

Aims:

  • To provide students with clinical experience in the recognition, management, prevention & treatment of oral diseases.
  • To develop students proficiency in the diagnosis and patient centred treatment planning for restorative, endodontic & minor oral surgical procedures
  • To develop students with the knowledge and skills to be proficient at planning & delivering all common fixed and removable prosthodontic procedures
  • To provide students with opportunities for the delivery of a full range of preventive, restorative and casualty care for healthy children and adults with straightforward dental needs.
  • To provide students with an orthodontic literacy sufficient to evaluate patient needs in general dental practice.
  • To stress the importance of team work in the clinical management of patients
  • To develop the skills & qualities expected from an independent dental practitioner.

Dental Radiology:

  • To be able to apply the principals of radiation protection in a competent manner in relation to Justification; Optimization and Limitation of exposure to ionizing radiation
  • To be able to identify pathology competently on intra oral films, DPT’s and Lateral Ceph radiographs and give an appropriate differential diagnosis.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the level of an independent dental practitioner, students should be able to:

  • Undertake pre-operative assessment, implement appropriate management techniques, including referral, and carry out relevant post-operative care
  • Present to the patient the findings resulting from their history & examination, including clinical & radiographic results, differential diagnoses, prognoses, treatment options, sequenced, integrated treatment planning and individualized recall intervals in a manner they can understand
  • Synthesise the full results of a patient’s assessment and make clinical judgments as appropriate. (1.3.1)
  • Assess and manage the health of periodontal as well as intraoral and perioral soft tissues, taking into account risk & lifestyle factors. (1.8.4)
  • Assess the need for, and where indicated, prescribe and provide biomechanically sound partial and complete dentures. (1.12.11)
  • Identify normal & abnormal growth, physical, mental & dental development and explain their significance. (1.11.1)
  • Demonstrate to an appropriate standard the effective management of all patients through the use of suitable interpersonal & behavioural skills, including those with anxiety or other special needs
  • Manage restorative dental procedures that preserve tooth structure, replace missing or defective tooth structure, maintain function, are aesthetic and long lasting and promote soft & hard tissue health. (1.12.5)
  • Apply as indicated by patient need, the full range of clinical skills necessary to provide preventive and restorative, oral and dental care for children in general dental practice (1.8.5).
  • Recognise and explain to patients the range of contemporary orthodontic treatment options, their possible outcomes, limitations and risks. (1.11.6)
  • Identify & explain the risks, benefits, complications & contraindications for dento alveolar surgical interventions and manage their patients with confidence & understanding. (1.10.4)
  • Take a patient centred approach to working with the dental and wider dental team and demonstrate effective leadership. (2.1)
  • Prescribe appropriately to other dental care professionals based on an integrated treatment plan.
  • Recognise emergency situations and show competence in the team management of such events and also to formulate protocols in order to minimize the risks of medical emergencies (1.6.6)
  • Have experience of domiciliary visits and the dental care of hospital in-patients
  • To be able to justify the taking of dental radiographs.
  • To be able to identify normal anatomy (including dental development), pathology and artifact on dental radiographs and construct a written report.
  • To be able to recognize conditions that may require urgent referrals from radiographs (benign and malignant neoplasia).

Teaching Information

Seminars, lectures and small group teaching. Simulated clinical scenarios, chairside teaching during supervised direct patient care.

Assessment Information

Formative:

Continuous assessment on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme with immediate feedback to the student.

Each student to complete a logbook/portfolio during the course with opportunity to reflect on progress during and at the end of the Unit

Student’s overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.

Summative: Finals

  1. Proposed OSCE mapped to Unit learning outcomes. (50% of Unit mark)
  2. E-assessment exam, using multi format e-format questioning. Knowledge assessment mapped to Unit learning outcomes relating to professionalism, integrated care, team working, Law and Ethics, Communication. (30% of Unit mark)
  3. Dental Radiology e-assessment in Year 5 term 2 (gateway to finals) 20% of the Unit mark
