Description including Unit Aims

This module aims to allow students to explore various learning styles and teaching approaches and the principles of course design, evaluation and assessment in order to improve the students’ own learning capacity and skills when teaching others.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Following the completion of this module students will be able to:

  • explain the ways in which different people learn and which teaching methods are most appropriate for which students
  • discuss the concepts of the adult learner, the lifelong learner and the reflective practitioner
  • discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different teaching methods
  • demonstrate the skills necessary to:
    • prepare and present a lecture
    • teach a small group
    • facilitate seminars and tutorials
  • discuss course design, development and evaluation
  • explain the use of formative assessment, summative assessment and self assessment
