Description including Unit Aims
This unit will have four components. The introductory set of sessions will deal with the distinctiveness (or otherwise) of welfare systems in East Asia. This will engage with theoretical debates about welfare regimes as well as more substantive discussions of human capital investment, demographic change and the contemporary political economy of East Asia. These discussions will then be linked to three policy themes: urbanization and shelter; wealth and inequality; welfare and family change.
This unit aims to:
- consider the distinctiveness (or otherwise) of welfare systems in East Asia in the areas of urbanization and shelter; wealth and inequality; welfare and family change;
- introduce students to theoretical debates about welfare regimes;
- explore human capital investment, demographic change and the contemporary political economy of East Asia.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit students will have developed their knowledge and critical understanding of:
- the distinctiveness (or otherwise) of welfare systems in East Asia in the areas of urbanization and shelter; wealth and inequality; welfare and family change;
- the major theoretical debates about welfare regimes;
- human capital investment, demographic change and the contemporary political economy of East Asia.
