Description including Unit Aims

This Unit is designed to help students develop their academic skills to support their studies at University, and employability skills to help them achieve their future career goals. It is specifically aimed at the transition from undergraduate to Masters level study and supports the diverse assessment approaches that the students will encounter as part of the programme. It also aims to equip students with the skills to manage their own professional development. Indicative examples include:

Preparation for greater degree of independent working

Team working

Giving and receiving feedback

Thinking – critically and reflexively

Writing – critically and reflexively

Being a reflexive

Storytelling and communicating

Stakeholder management

Personal development planning

Being creative

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Apply a range of academic skills necessary to successfully engage with the diverse assessment methods within the programme
2. Demonstrate an ability to produce effective analysis, argument and reflection through a variety of mediums (written, verbal etc)
3. Recognise and value the purpose of personal development planning and demonstrate competence in its application
4. Communicate effectively and persuasively in different academic and professional settings and with different audiences/stakeholders
5. Demonstrate a self-awareness and understand the value of reflective practice, for being a student of management and recognise its value for managing

Teaching Information

20 hours per Teaching Block. The unit will be delivered through a variety of formats, including interactive participatory workshops. Personal development planning is supported by the university online and many of the professional development activities supported by the careers service are also online.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be through:

Peer review (20%) based on participation and performance (criteria to be co-created with the participating students). (ILO 1,3,4,5)

Individual reflective portfolio (80%). A visual, annotated portfolio exploring key themes (2 or 3) considered as part of the unit. Word count guide: 2000 (ILO 1,2,4,5)

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
