Description including Unit Aims

This unit describes the principles of historical study in respect of the existence of the world&s Sign Language People (SLPs). It takes a post-colonial perspective in analysing various types of narratives which have been developed to describe and/or explain $Deaf History&, notably the medical and educational narratives developed by non-Deaf people. It then examines SLP narratives and subjects them to a similar post-colonial perspective which is encapsulated in the new concept of Deafhood. The main focus of the unit is the UK, but it also draws on the USA and European histories where appropriate.
