Description including Unit Aims

In this unit students will work individually or in groups to plan, create, deliver, and evaluate public-facing resources to engage and inform selected audiences.

This unit aims to:

  • Provide opportunities to communicate to non-specialist audiences
  • Develop systematic skills in planning, creation, and evaluation of engagement and communication activities
  • Use comprehensive understanding of technical topics to inform and engage
  • Employ current research and best-practice in the evaluation of impact
  • Produce publication-quality outputs that students can showcase as portfolio pieces

During the planning and proposal stage of this unit, students will define an audience, an output format, and evaluation metrics, and how these will meet the assessment framework for the unit.

Outputs could include, but are not limited to:

  • Videos
  • Websites
  • Written/printed materials
  • Activities or events

Audiences could include, but are not limited to:

  • School students of varying ages * Specific demographics, based on sector and institution goals * The general public, either at a specific event or location (e.g. festival, museum) or in the wider world.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

1. Communicate technical information to a diverse audience (CEng UK-SPEC D1)

2. Propose goals, work plans, and evaluation methods, and work in a group to complete a project (CEng UK-SPEC D2,D3)

3. Work independently to develop communication and production skills to achieve a goal

Assessment Information

20% project proposal, including how outputs will meet assessment criteria (ILO 2)

  • 40% report on delivered activity or output, linking back to assessment criteria (ILO 1, 3)
  • 40% impact evaluation report, based on proposed criteria and methodology (ILO 2, 3)
