Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides an outline as to how the heritage assets are managed in the UK and internationally, looking at systems of protection and designation, their conservation management, and interpretation, both within a landscape and museum context. The special role that World Heritage Sites have will be examined.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The unit is designed to provide an understanding of the management and conservation of heritage asset in the UK and internationally. Students will be expected to be able:

• Understand the planning and designation framework (both land-based and marine)
• Understand the institutional structure of heritage in the UK (LPA’s, EH, National Trust etc.) as well as museums and other public bodies.
• Grasp the principles of ‘value-based’ conservation management
• Have a broad knowledge of World Heritage sites and associated processes
• Be able to write a Conservation Management plan related to their chosen programme or pathway.

Lectures, seminars, site visits (including local authorities etc.) and fieldwork

Assessment Information

The unit will be assessed by a Conservation Management Plan, using the nationally agree guidelines. The plan will centre around a heritage asset, that is chosen by the student, and wll be related to the chosen pathway or programme. A target length of 4,500 words, as well as illustrations.
