Description including Unit Aims
In recent decades the Christian church, particularly in the West, has seen a major shift in society's understandings of gender and sexuality and sexual morality. The church has struggled to know how to relate Scripture and Christian tradition faithfully to these developments and new understandings.
This unit will centre around this central question of "How do we relate the vision of sexuality found in the Bible and Christian tradition to contemporary Christian discipleship and mission?"
It will therefore offer an integrated exploration of changing societal and Christian attitudes and norms in relation to such areas as gender, singleness, marriage and cohabitation, divorce and same-sex relationships.
Intended Learning Outcomes
This unit aims to
- enable students to integrate a range of Christian resources and tools from other disciplines into an holistic approach to issues of sex, gender, marriage and singleness;
- encourage students to identify and respond to key questions relating to biblical, theological, historical, cultural and missiological issues in the study of human sexuality;
- develop a methodology for responding to pastoral and missional challenges in relation to sexuality that integrates different approaches with their prior experience;
- enable deeper understanding of the challenges in this area for Christian discipleship and mission and the revolutionary pattern of Christian witness so students are equipped to deal pastorally with issues of sexuality with confidence and sensitivity.
On completing the unit students will
- have developed skills in lateral thinking and making connections between different elements of their training and studies;
- have evaluated the hermeneutical, missiological and pastoral challenges facing the church;
- be better able to apply Scripture and different Christian understandings in the area of sexuality critically to contemporary mission and ministry;
- be better able to relate their own experience and understanding to pastoral ministry.
Teaching Information
A variety of teaching methods will be used including lectures (internal and with outside expertise), case studies and small group work on particular practical projects related to the module. Students will be encouraged to create mind maps to help connect the different perspectives and approaches and relate the central question to specific issues. Tutors providing input from different disciplines will form a panel to answer questions at the end of the week.
The unit will consist of 20 hours of contact time in one whole week devoted to the unit.
Assessment Information
There will be two elements of assessment:
- Group project: Students will work on a group project throughout the week with a group of 5/6 people which will be presented as a corporate submission of the contributions of each student in the group. Each contribution will represent a task equivalent to 1,200 words from each student, and may include visual and other material. Each student’s contribution to the presentation will be assessed separately.
- Individual Portfolio: Students will assemble a portfolio of personal reflections and engagement with the theme of each day’s activity equivalent to 300 words per day. These two elements will be assessed equally so that 50% of the final mark will be allocated to each element.
