Description including Unit Aims

The Black Humanities Option unit will allow Black Humanities MA students to tailor their programme of study to their own academic interests and aims. It invites student to choose from a selection of UG units offered in this growing field of study, ranging from History, English and History of Art to Modern Languages, Music and Film.

This unit will enable students to:

Identify a suitable topic for a small-scale independent research project arising from a taught unit of their choice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will have:

  1. Identified and analysed key themes and approaches in the chosen unit of study.
  2. Discussed and evaluated the debates and discourse opened up by the chosen unit of study in correlation with those examined in the wider MA programme.
  3. Worked with primary sources and select pertinent evidence in order to illustrate/demonstrate specific and more general points.
  4. Presented and researched in written forms and styles appropriate to the discipline of the chosen unit of study and to M level.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered online through a combination of synchronous sessions and asynchronous activities, including seminars, lectures, and collaborative as well as self-directed learning opportunities supported by tutor consultation.

Assessment Information

One 5,000 word essay (100%)

Conduct a small-scale independent study. Produce a 5,000 word essay that reflects an engagement with the unit of choice alongside the themes, issues and discourses that arise in the wider MA programme.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. MODLM0047).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
