Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides participants with the opportunity to present for assessment a published article (with ISBN or ISSN) or other equivalent piece (to be agreed by the Pathway Co-ordinator) in the public domain. The selected publication must be one that has been published in the preceding five years. The complete assignment should consist of the publication and an accompanying that places the publication within the broad field of the Pathway, argues its relevance, and undertakes a self-assessment concerning issues raised by the process of writing or production. The commentary will be 4,000 words (or equivalent.) A proposal should be agreed with the Pathway Co-ordinator to judge if the published work meets the specified criteria and sufficiently meets significant aspects of the aims of the programme.

Aims:

The unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

• Present suitable short publications for assessment

• Engage in, through self-assessment and reflection, the issues involved in evaluating a publication produced for professional and academic purposes

• Consider feedback elicited by the publication and its associated presentation (or other means of dissemination.)

• Develop critical reflection on the relevance of the publication within the broad field of the Pathway

Intended Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes achieved by a successful candidate will be:

• Carefully considered self-evaluation of one of the student’s own publications presented in an appropriate, scholarly manner

• Engagement with the complex issues of evaluating publications

• An ability to critically review the relevance of one of their own publications to the broad field of the pathway with reference to appropriate other literature

• Evaluation of their intentions against their actual published outcome.

• Engagement with any responses to the publication and ability to audit relevant publication skills and identify any areas requiring further research or development.

Tutorials, individual and group seminars, student presentation to departmental research seminars and doctoral conference.

Assessment Information

The submission of the publication will be accompanied by a commentary that places the publication within the broad field of the pathway and argues its relevance with reference to appropriate other literature. The commentary will usually be 4,000 words.

Work presented for this unit must be substantially different from that presented for any other unit. For example, a publication based on an earlier assignment may not be presented for a second time in order to gain further credit.
