Why is this unit important?

Analysis is the study of the continuum. It is central to mathematics and its applications, encompassing calculus and the theory of functions. Applied Analysis A provides a rigorous foundation for the theory of functions of a single real variable. Its companion unit, Applied Analysis B, provides an analogous foundation for functions of several real variables.

The emphasis is on calculation and problem-solving, underpinned by theory and computation. On the theoretical side, methods of calculus are developed systematically; definitions and theorems are formulated precisely, and some theorems are proved, so that the scope of the theory is clearly established. On the computational side, algorithms, coding and graphics complement paper-and-pencil-based methods.

Calculus and analysis are central to core parts of data science, including optimisation, representations of functions, convexity, probability and statistics. The unit introduces methods of proof and logical rigor.

  • Logical quantifiers; methods of proof

Real numbers; sequences and series; limits

  • Continuous functions; differentiable functions; inverse functions; exponential, trigonometric and log functions; mean value theorems and Taylor’s theorem; higher derivatives; convex functions.
  • Integration; fundamental theorem of calculus; methods of integration; improper integrals
  • Applications to optimisation and probability
  • Computation: root-finding, optimisation, integration, visual/graphical representations

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the unit, the students should be able to:

  • apply and synthesise a range of core methods
  • formulate definitions of core concepts
  • apply and/or prove core theorems
  • recognise and/or construct examples and counterexamples
  • apply and/or code a range of algorithms and computational graphics techniques
  • evaluate the efficiency of algorithms

Assessment for learning/Formative assessment:

  • problem sheets set by the lecturer and marked by the students' tutors.

Assessment of learning/Summative assessment:

  • Open-note examination (80%)
  • Coursework (20%)

How much time the unit requires

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
