Description including Unit Aims

This is a 20 credit introductory unit in preliminary teaching skills, aimed at preparing students for entry into the profession of teaching English as a foreign language. It focuses on the central aspects of the teaching process and develops the students’ ability to handle the key components of the language system of English as well as the four skills. In more detail, its aims are:

  • To develop an awareness of the language and a knowledge of the description of English
  • To develop an understanding of the roles of the teacher and learner
  • To develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching
  • To develop basic skills for classroom teaching
  • To develop familiarity with resources and materials for use with EFL students
  • To identify opportunities for future development as professionals in the field.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

ILO1: demonstrate knowledge of the different learning and teaching styles at adult level;

ILO2: use basic English Language Teaching terminology for describing form, structure, usage and skills;

ILO3: analyse language and convey form, meaning and use to learners;

ILO4: select and evaluate appropriate materials;

ILO5; demonstrate understanding of teaching methods and the methodology that underpins them.

Teaching Information

There will be one 2.5 hour session each week for 10 weeks. This is in the form of a seminar sessions, which will consist of a series of input sessions interspersed with discussion of the content of the input as well as the reading or other set material for that week. This will be taught by a qualified ELT teacher trainer and will use a communicative approach to teaching. In addition, sessions are supported by online learning using materials available on Blackboard. Students are expected to do 75 hours independent study during the course which will involve preparation and follow-up of weekly sessions as well as preparation for assignments and exams.

Groups will be no larger than 16.

Assessment Information


60% coursework

assignment 1 (weighting 20%) assessing ILO2, 3, 5);

assignment 2 (weighting 40%) assessing ILO1, 2, 3, 4, 5.


3 hour exam (weighting 40%) - short answers questions and one essay (500-700 words) assessing ILO1,2,3,4,5.
