Unit Information

This module will introduce the students to advanced grafting techniques including sinus grafting, block grafts, distraction techniques and complex grafts.

Your learning on this unit

• To have a knowledge of advanced surgical techniques.
• To have a knowledge of interdisciplinary management of complex cases.

How you will learn

Lectures and small group teaching on study day 12. Distance learning package delivered via Blackboard including additional ‘podcast’ lectures/videos and directed reading. This unit runs concurrently with the Clinical Practice attachment Unit and is closely linked with it, teaching is therefore supplemented by one to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment

During the study day via direct verbal feedback.

Summative Assessments

Written assignment and Powerpoint presentation to include aspects of the following:

1. Advanced additive grafting procedures. A written assignment looking at the relative indications and contraindications of advanced grafting techniques in the management of the atrophic premaxilla, including osseodistraction. 50% of 'the 'unit mark
2. Sinus grafting procedures. A Powerpoint presentation of the assessment, restorative plan, surgical plan and maintenance requirements to restore a unilateral atrophic posterior maxilla free-end saddle with a pneumatised antrum. 50% of the unit mark
3. Multidisciplinary care. Written assignment looking the clinical management of multidisciplinary cases and the development of a clinical care pathway – Pass or Fail

Total 100% of unit marks.

Submission date will be given to students verbally and on Blackboard.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
