This year-long unit is designed for those who have little or no previous knowledge of Latin. In it you will learn all the fundamental morphology and syntax of classical Latin. Teaching block 1 aims to cover chapters 1-6 of Learn to Read Latin, teaching block 2 to cover 7-11 and excerpts from chapters 12-14. In addition, in teaching block 2 you will read a substantial amount of un-adapted ancient Latin. At the conclusion of this course you should be able to read straightforward Latin texts on your own, with the aid of a reference grammar and dictionary.
Students will understand and be able to identify and explain the syntax of both simple and complex Latin sentences. They will memorise at least 500 words of Latin vocabulary. They will be able to read unadapted classical Latin with the aid of a lexicon and grammar book.
Teaching will include lectures, interactive exercises and drills, and revision of daily homework assignments
2 x 90 min exams weighted at 33% (one at the end of each TB), plus a practical criticism exercise of 2,500 words worth 33%.
