Description including Unit Aims

This module is designed to offer the student theoretical and practice experience in the referral criteria, taking, processing and interpretation of intra and extra oral radiographs. The course complies with the term 'adequate training' as specified in the ionising radiation (Medical Exposure) regulation.

This includes the effects of ionising radiation on the tissues and the importance of quality control and quality assurance.

Aims:

  • To provide the core of knowledge in dental radiography as approved by the council of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in October 1993.
  • To provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience in radiation production, radiation protection and statutory obligations relating to ionising radiation as are relevant to their functions as practitioner or operator.
  • To provide detailed teaching in diagnostic radiology as relevant to their specific areas of practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Be competent at taking and processing the various film views used in general dental practice.
  • Be competent at identifying anatomical features and interpreting common pathology.
  • Have knowledge of the hazards of ionising radiation and regulations relating to them, including radiation protection and dose radiation.
  • Be familiar with the principles, which underlie dental radiograph techniques.
  • Be familiar with the assessment of image quality.
  • Be familiar with alternative imaging techniques.

Assessment Information

Formal unseen written examination, consisting of short answer questions.
