Year 1
Elements:
- The Dentist in Society Year 1
- Portfolio Year 1
The unit aims to provide students with an introduction to social science, communication and research skills applicable to dentistry. There will be a specific focus on the needs of different patient groups including children, adults, older people, and those with special care requirements.
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit a successful student will be able to:
- describe and summarise aspects of sociological theory that relate to health and illness
- discuss demographic factors that are associated with health inequalities
- explain the concepts of consent and confidentiality within the context of the Human Rights Act
- examine the influence of family and demographic factors on the health care status of an individual and document the results of this examination in a social history report
