Recent controversies surrounding issues such as environmental misuse, rewards to senior managers, the exploitation of third world workers and corporate fraud have made business ethics front-page news. Organisations which ignore the ethical and social implications of their business practice risk losing their reputations or worse. However, it can be difficult to determine the $right& course of action, and even when that appears reasonably obvious, managers can feel compelled to balance ethical practice against their own interests or the competitive position of their organisation. It is not the intention of this unit to preach a certain set of standards or principles but to encourage participants to reflect on what is important to them. This reflection, together with the application of ethical concepts covered in the unit, should mean that participants are better able to address ethical dilemmas in a rational way, and be able to honestly justify the decision made $ both for sake of their personal integrity and that of the organisation for which they work.
