Description including Unit Aims

This is a compulsory 10cp unit and an integral part of the 180 cp MRes programme in Advanced Composites. The topics covered will include fundamental concepts for composites, composite materials properties, laminate analysis, beam, truss and plate structures.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the students will be able to:

  • appreciate key material properties for composite materials and their drivers
  • undertake basic stressing and structural analysis.

50% Materials coursework (design/materials selection case study, with associated written report)

50% Structures written examination (3 hours in May/June)
