Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces the analytical and numerical techniques that are used in the electromagnetic and thermal design of modern high-performance AC machines, in particular focussing on the design of AC induction motors and brushless AC permanent magnet machines. During the unit a parametric design spreadsheet will be developed and will be used to support an electrical machine sizing case study.

A second unit EENGM7041 Electrical Drives explores the control of AC machines.

1. Explain the fundamental requirements that determine the operation and size of an electrical machine

2. Derive the bases of analytical techniques that are used in the design of AC windings, in the sizing of the magnetic circuit, and in the calculation of characteristic electrical parameters (inductance, emf, etc)


3. Embody analytical techniques in a parametric design tool that can be used to electromagnetically size an AC electrical machine stator


4. Examine how losses and their distribution are determined from the electrical machine operating point. Understand the use of lumped parameter thermal networks in determining electrical machine thermal behaviour


5. Appraise the critical requirements and material properties that impact the specification of an electrical machine design


6. Undertake an electromagnetic sizing of an electrical machine for a representative application case study
