Description including Unit Aims

Students will be able to shadow adult or paediatric nephrologists during in-patient and out-patient consultations and join discussions during multidisciplinary team meetings

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To be able to discuss a patient’s history to a team
  • To independently research a case
  • To critically appraise a disease case

Teaching Information

Observations of clinical discussions with patients, including on the ward

Discussions with consultants and the wider team

Assessment Information

Formative feedback from consultant on depth of discussion and critical thought

Case study write-up and presentation (100%)

3000 word case report centred around a case that the student has observed during their Placement. To identify the cause using the most appropriate criteria, to discuss how the disease may present and discuss the most appropriate treatment. Review of the literature should support the write-up. A 10min presentation to MRes Health Sciences Research (Renal) student peers within the case facilitated tutorials with discussion (20% of write-up mark).
