Description including Unit Aims

This module will develop the awareness and understanding of:

• Bone biology and bone protective therapy
• Surgical manipulation of soft tissue for and around teeth and implants
• Periodontal and peri implant health, conditions and diseases

Intended Learning Outcomes

Gain knowledge and understanding of the:

• Impact of skeletal therapies on patients requiring minor oral surgery and dental implant procedures
• Practical principles of wound healing
• Aetiology, classification, diagnosis and management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases
• Concepts of microsurgery for soft tissue management.

Develop clinically applicable skills with ‘hands on’ practical exercises using pigs’ jaws including:

• Microsurgical flap design, flap manipulation and execution
• Soft tissue augmentation techniques
• Suturing techniques
• Safety and equipment evaluation

Teaching Information

Lectures and small group teaching on unit 8 will be held over 2 days. Distance learning package delivered via Blackboard including additional lectures/videos and directed reading. This unit runs concurrently with the Clinical Practice attachment unit (2) and is closely linked with it, unit (8) teaching is therefore supplemented by one to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment

• Evaluation of the practical exercises is conducted by the supervisors present.
• Students will be required to complete a case-based discussion (CBD) evaluation exercise.

Summative Assessments

• Written assignment looking at implant health and disease - 100% of unit mark

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
