Description including Unit Aims

During this Unit students will work on a challenge task where they will have the opportunity to integrate and consolidate the learning acquired across the programme. This unit will allow them to identify emerging opportunities and challenges in the fields of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine and to develop novel research, impact or communication proposals.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students successfully completing this Unit will:

  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge and critical awareness of current problems and/or new opportunities in the Stem Cells and Regeneration Field.
  • Be able to integrate and critically evaluate key discoveries and methodologies across the Stem Cells and Regeneration Field to identify emerging opportunities and challenges.
  • Be able to develop solutions to complex issues both scientifically and creatively, and to communicate these to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Be able to effectively communicate evidence, arguments and conclusions using a range of formats in a manner appropriate to the intended audience.
  • Be able to solve problems with self-direction and originality.

Teaching Information

  • Online audio lectures and resources
  • Self-directed study
  • Synchronous online discussion sessions

Assessment Information

The students will be able to select one of the following summative assessment formats contributing 100% of the unit mark:

  • Research proposal (3000 words) investigating a novel solution to a given clinical or preclinical challenge.
  • An impact analysis (3000 words) that details how a specific challenge in the field of stem cells or regenerative medicine can be addressed. This may include the idea of setting up a new entrepreneurial venture but could also cover a change in policy, a new treatment or similar.
  • A communications portfolio (3000 words or equivalent media) that summarises a Stem Cells and Regeneration related topic for at least two different target audiences. The portfolio should include at least one piece of writing, but the second illustration may be an alternative media.

The pass-mark for this Unit is 50%

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. BRMSM0045).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
