Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides an opportunity for the student to develop research skills in their particular pathway or specialisation within the broad discipline of archaeology, through independent study and the preparation of a research-based paper.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The unit is designed to provide an understanding of how to study the past through sites, landscapes, material culture, buildings and shipwrecks. The key learning outcomes will include:

  • locating sources of archaeological data, from fieldwork to archives and library and internet resources.
  • Evaluating archaeological data, its quality and significance
  • To be able to use data to test hypotheses, generated from a broad understanding of the discipline and current research debates
  • To deliver an academically sound and professional research paper.

Teaching Information

10 hours of contact time with the topic tutor, by arrangement. Field trips and practical components may form a part of this unit.

Assessment Information

The unit will be assessed by a submission (or submissions) to be agreed in advance with the Unit Director and topic tutor, and will be related to the chosen pathway or programme. The submission(s) will be equivalent in academic scope and weight to an essay of 5000 words. The topic and nature of the submission(s) will be agreed in advance of submission with the Unit Director or topic tutor, as appropriate.
