Unit Information

This unit will introduce students to the richness and diversity of Italian culture, from the Middle Ages to the present. Students will also consider and apply some of the critical frameworks we can use to study Italy and Italian culture today. Teaching will be divided into thematic blocks, which will change according to staff involvement. These may include topics such as the idea of Italy, urban and regional cultures, power, and gender. The unit will use a variety of materials, including literature, film, historical documents and media texts, and will draw on secondary literature to explore different critical and theoretical approaches to Italian culture.

Your learning on this unit

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate and apply a knowledge of a range of cultural works drawn from a range of periods;

2. Explain and deploy appropriate critical skills to discuss and analyse Italian culture;

3. Compose critical arguments appropriate to level C/4;

4. Develop collaborative skills when working alongside their peers.

How you will learn

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous sessions and asynchronous activities, including seminars, lectures, formative tasks and collaborative as well as self-directed learning opportunities supported by tutor consultation.

How you will be assessed

Tasks which count towards your unit mark (summative):

1 x 15-minute group presentation (30%) [ILOs 1-4]

1 x 2000-word essay (70%) [ILOs 1-3]

When assessment does not go to plan

When required by the Board of Examiners, you will normally complete reassessments in the same formats as those outlined above. However, the Board reserves the right to modify the form or number of reassessments required. Details of reassessments are normally confirmed by the School shortly after the notification of your results at the end of the academic year.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. ITAL10036).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
