Description including Unit Aims

The aim is to give students beneficial study experience at a foreign higher education institution, which has a bilateral student exchange agreement with the University of Bristol. The students take a range of civil engineering and related studies thus enabling progression to year 4 with credit transfer.

The 3rd year study plan is subject to the agreement of the Department, but wherever possible it should meet the following requirements: • The equivalent of a full 120 credit workload should be undertaken during the year abroad, of which at least 100 credits should be Civil Engineering or closely related units. The remaining 20 credits may be free choice, subject to the approval of the Department. • A substantial research project (equivalent of at least 20 credits carried out either individually or in pair) OR a group design project should be taken. The other type of project is to be taken in Bristol in the 4th year. A copy of the project report should be presented back in Bristol. • Units equivalent to at least three units from List CENG3 should be taken while abroad. The outstanding units from this list shall be taken in Bristol in the 4th year. List CENG3 includes Structures 3, Geotechnics 3, Water Engineering 3, Civil Engineering Systems 3, Professional Studies B and Water Resources Project 3. Where no research or design project is possible during third year, Water Resources Project 3 must be taken during fourth year. • Other units for the year abroad should be of a suitable level and should cover a good range of subjects. Students are encouraged to take specialist units at the host university that are not available in Bristol.

Normally the units undertaken at host institutes will be at level M/7. Any shortfall in M level study can be made up in 4th year provided more units from list CENG3 are taken.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Undertaking study at a foreign institution is a wide-ranging activity and, as such, will contribute to a wide range of program learning outcomes. The precise details will depend to some extent on the topics chosen at the host institution but mechanisms are in place to ensure that the knowledge and understanding, and intellectual and other skills gained by the end of 4th year are similar to those achieved during the equivalent programme offered at Bristol.

Teaching Information

As at the host institution - normally includes lectures and project work

Assessment Information

The marks awarded at the host institutions are transferred to equivalent Bristol marks by the appropriate faculty wide procedure.
