Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate and Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units.

The Surgical Skills 2 Unit is a single element which builds on the previous surgical unit with the following general aims: -

To provide the students with the knowledge and clinical foundations to assess and, where appropriate, undertake the management of more challenging surgical cases such as the management of wisdom teeth, teeth with antral involvement, and medically compromised patients.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • To assess and triage patients requiring removal of wisdom teeth or where there is a risk of antral involvement or nerve injury
  • To critique current controversies in the management of wisdom teeth
  • To discuss the principles of surgery for wisdom tooth removal
  • To manage, where appropriate, the complications of surgery including: oral antral comunication, fracture tuberosity and nerve injury
  • To analyse the guidelines for the management of medically compromised patients in general practice including those taking antiplatelet, anticoagulants, bisphosphonate, or steroid therapy, and patients at risk of infective endocarditis

The student will acquire the skills and attributes necessary:

  • To recognise your personal scope of safe practice and professional obligations
  • To assess radiographs to determine complexity of surgery and relative risk of antral or nerve involvement
  • To demonstrate the closure of an oral antral communication
  • To develop practice protocols for the management of wisdom teeth
  • To apply clinical guidelines for the management of medically compromised patients including those taking antiplatelet, anticoagulant, bisphosphonate, or steroid therapy, and patients at risk of infective endocarditis

Teaching Information

Teaching will use a blended learning approach delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Students will be expected to engage with all learning.

A range of teaching are used in the unit including:

  • Self directed CAL sessions
  • Seminars with videos
  • Clinical skills sessions
  • Reflecting writing

Assessment Information

This Unit will have two summative assessments:

1. Written coursework assessment of 2,000 words (50%)

2. Final written (multiple short answer) examination of 90minutes duration (50%)

All assessments must be passed ≥ 50% and there is no compensation between the individual assessments.

Formative assessment will include:

  • Service development project.
  • Development of practice protocols.
  • Feedback on practical exercises.

Feedback will be provided at the study days as small group tutorials and individual performance.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. ORDSM0035).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
