Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate, Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Periodontology Unit has the following general aims:

• To reinforce the knowledge and skills to understand the aetiology and pathology of periodontal disease to underpin the clinical management of periodontal disease.
• To strengthen knowledge and clinical skills that will enable appropriate diagnosis and treatment planning for periodontal patients.
• To improve expertise in effective hygiene phase treatment on patients with periodontal disease.
• Enable quality and comprehensive long-term care for periodontal patients.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

• the different types of periodontal diseases and their clinical presentation
• the role of the plaque biofilm and the interaction with the immune system in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease
• the principles of non-surgical management of periodontal disease
• the management of furcation involved multi-rooted teeth
• the effect of systemic disease and risk factors on the presentation and progression of periodontal disease

The student will acquire the skills and attributes necessary for:

• the delivery of oral hygiene advice tailored for the individual patient
• the delivery of smoking cessation advice
• the delivery of root surface instrumentation
• the use of systemically or locally delivered antimicrobials
• the assessment of outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy
• the prescription periodontal maintenance protocols
• the understanding of basic periodontal surgery

Teaching Information

This is a blended learning course, which includes 2 intensive study days and supporting online learning materials.

It is expected that students will require up to 5 hours each week to participate in reading and learning activities for the duration of this unit.

Online resources include audiovisual materials, supporting documents and online activities with interactive tasks to support learning.

Assessment Information

This unit will have the following three summative assessments:

1. A 2,500 word Reflective Case Report which will contribute to 50% of the unit mark

2. A final unit examination which which will contribute 50% of the unit mark. The exam has two parts:

- Multiple Short Answer questions (25%) - E-assessment (25%)

All assessment must be passed ≥ 50% and there is no compensation between the individual assessments.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
