Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to: enable students to develop conceptual and detailed solutions for a realistic civil engineering project, utilising and extending their knowledge, understanding and skills acquired throughout the degree programme; encourage group working on inter-disciplinary problems; allow students to practise management, teamwork and organisational skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the project successful students will:

ULO 1. have developed a detailed design brief from an initial outline brief; (PLOs A2,A3,A5, A6, A7, A8, A9; B1,B2,B4,B7-9; C1-9)

ULO 2. have researched background information; (PLOs A3-7; B2; C3,5,7-8)

ULO 3. have created and evaluated a range of design solutions, taking into account technical, economic and environmental contexts; (PLOs A1-7; B1-9; C1-8)

ULO 4. have selected a preferred solution; (PLOs A4-7; B1-8; C1-9)

ULO 5. have developed in detail appropriate parts of the preferred design; (PLOs A1-4; B1-3; C1-4,7,8)

ULO 6. have planned and managed the project using project management, QA and CDM procedures; (PLOs A5-7; B6-8: C 8)

ULO 7. have prepared a competent technical report and associated design output. (PLOs C9)
