Description including Unit Aims

The unit will provide a structured and supervised opportunity for final year students to pursue a portfolio of independent projects to agreed topics of interest within the areas of performance or screen studies. The portfolio will comprise:

EITHER

10,000-word extended essay & 20-minute performance/15-minute screenwork + viva

OR

20-minute performance/15-minute screenwork + viva & Industrial Placement + 5,000-word critical analysis

As part of the placement the student will conduct appropriate tasks under the guidance of a nominated mentor from the host organization and under the supervision of an academic teacher from the Department.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To demonstrate knowledge of, and use creatively, a wider range of secondary literature than at Level I
  • To be able to apply with confidence and competence a range of established critical and theoretical ideas and to develop a critical approach towards them
  • To present work that is highly assured in its use of English and referencing
  • To be able to communicate fluently key ideas based on secondary reading, relevant primary texts and independent research/lines of inquiry
  • To demonstrate advanced skills of time management
  • To plan and execute a research project
  • To demonstrate ability to work constructively and creatively in a professional setting
  • To demonstrate ability to work within the disciplines of production and project processes, working to deadlines and within production budgets of the host organization
  • To work independently and reach individual/personal judgements within a professional context

Teaching Information

Supervision x 10 (30 hours) Placement of 75-150 hours accompanied by Mentor’s report and 5,000-word written component.

Assessment Information

EITHER

10,000-word extended essay (50%) & 20-minute performance/15-minute screenwork + viva (50%)

OR

20-minute performance/15-minute screenwork + viva (50%), Industrial Placement (25%), 5,000-word critical analysis (25%)

Reading and references will be provided individually according to the agreed project.
