Description including Unit Aims

The overall aim of this unit will be to enable students to gain further experience of research at a postgraduate level, under the supervision of a different member of staff to Rotation Project 1. This will be in the form of an individual research project based in a group, subject area or method relating to the intended PhD subject area. The research will be guided by the supervisor with regular meetings with the student to set goals and to show how research is managed.

Intended Learning Outcomes

To be able to:

  • Select the most appropriate methods to solve research challenges.
  • Develop skills in finding relevant literature and to gain an understanding of the methods involved in the project.
  • Design and/or interpret experiments, considering the importance of appropriate controls.
  • Collect and appropriately present scientific findings.
  • Critically analyse the scientific findings.
  • Communicate these findings in the form of a scientific research paper.

Teaching Information

Scientific research may be conducted through a variety of methods; in a laboratory and / or field environment, review of literature and/or data analysis. One to one meetings with supervisors to discuss the project and its progress.

Assessment Information

There will be two assessment components: (1) to demonstrate the planning and execution of scientific research by continuous assessment (30%), and (2) critically evaluating data and communicating findings, by writing a project report (70%).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
