This unit extends students&� knowledge about using qualitative approaches to research in education. They will acquire experience in organising and analysing various forms of qualitative data, including textual, oral and visual data from contemporary, historical and secondary sources. Modes of analysis and data organisation considered will include thematic and grounded theory analysis, ethnography, case studies, critical discourse & policy analysis and narrative & life history. Computerised packages for qualitative data analysis will be introduced. Students will also consider how to integrate data from different qualitative methods and relate qualitative data to sensitising concepts/theories. They will gain an understanding of how qualitative data may be made relevant to policy makers and practitioners. Students will acquire skills in how to write about and publish qualitative data in a coherent way for varied audiences. Attention will be paid to the values, politics and ethics surrounding the generation, reporting and dissemination of qualitative research.
