Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces a wide range of backgrounds to the basic concepts of aircraft aerodynamics, flight performance theory and practice, and the principles of mechanics. The unit provides a basic introduction to the use of MATLAB in aerospace engineering. The unit also includes a general lecture programme, example classes and a practical design/build/fly project to encourage them to take a wider view of aeronautics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will have an understanding of the fundamental concepts of statics and dynamics, and an ability to analyse and solve related problems in mechanics;

show an appreciation of some of the important aspects of flight, in particular the basic aerodynamic characteristics and the conventional performance of fixed-wing aircraft, with the ability to calculate and analyse aspects of aircraft performance; be able to apply the MATLAB software package to the solution of basic problems in aerospace engineering

Teaching Information

Lectures, flight project during weeks 4-8

Assessment Information

70% 3-hour Examination in May/June 15% MATLAB project 10% In-class assessment 5% Flight Project
