Description including Unit Aims

During this unit students will conduct a research-based project on a topic related to the field of translational cardiovascular medicine. The students can choose if they wish to do a laboratory based ‘wet’ research project or a ‘dry’ literature review, project proposal, or data analysis project. This unit aims to teach students to design and conduct good quality research in the field of translational cardiovascular medicine. Candidates will be able to select a project topic offered from a range of potential projects

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students successfully completing this module will be able to:

• Undertake a literature search in their field of study within the area of translational cardiovascular medicine.
• Design and undertake a research project.
• Critically analyse research data and present and discuss findings.

Teaching Information

• Guidance from project supervisor
• Laboratory techniques in the case of experimental research projects, which are taught online with lectures and practical sessions

Assessment Information

• Short research proposal (3000 words), contributing 10% to the unit mark.
• Critical literature review, project proposal, data analysis or laboratory-based project (7000 words), contributing 70% to the unit mark
• Oral presentation and viva, contributing 20% to the unit mark.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
