Description including Unit Aims

A comprehensive study of the principles and practice of design and manufacture of composites to promote the understanding of the increased complexity of materials properties, and the behaviour and analysis methods for the design and manufacture of advanced composite structures.

Design and Manufacturing information and methods are presented in a series of lectures including illustrations worked examples and Case Studies. Practical understanding of basic manufacturing processes is also supported by laboratory and class demonstrations.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to:

  1. identify and understand the key issues and methods for the design and manufacture of advanced composite structures;
  2. apply the basic principles for conceptual design, manufacturability analysis, initial sizing, and preliminary structural analysis of advanced composite components.
  3. independently carry out conceptual design, manufacturability analysis, initial sizing, and preliminary structural analysis of advanced composite components according to a specific set of requirements.
  4. carry out manufacturability analysis, design, plan, and develop the build of an advanced composite component according to a specific set of requirements.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including lectures, example problems and self-directed exercises, drop-in sessions and practical activities.

Assessment Information

50% scheduled 3-hour online exam in January, consisting of short answer questions plus themed long answer questions.

  • ILO 1: through wide ranging sets of short answer design and manufacturing questions
  • ILO 2: through specific themed design and manufacture long answer problem questions.

50% case study coursework

  • ILO 3: through specific design case study task
  • ILO 4: through specific manufacture case study task.

Formative assessment:

ILO 1 - 4 through example questions, themed problems and case-studies with typical solution guidance and online feedback.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
