Aims:
To equip students with understanding and analytical skills to quantify the ways in which reliance on the strengths of materials may be used to develop novel theories for economic design of structures incorporating metals, with applications to steel frames, continuous beams and to reinforced concrete slabs.
To illustrate to students how to use physical reasoning to develop approximate models that underpin iterative strategies for analysing the complex behaviours of structures due to both material and geometric nonlinearities.
