Description including Unit Aims

Students will undertake an individual research project within the nuclear hub allowing them to develop their research skills. At the end of the project the results will be presented in the form of a final dissertation and in a project conference.

Aims:

To enable students to perform independent research

To present research findings both in writing and orally

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of a successful project, the students will be able to:

  1. conduct a research project.
  2. apply the appropriate techniques and carry out investigations.
  3. demonstrate time management skills.
  4. write-up work for reporting purposes.
  5. present work in a conference setting.

Teaching Information

Students will be assigned a project supervisor for the duration of the project and they can expect to meet regularly with them for discussions on the project progress.

Assessment Information

Formative feedback will be through regular meetings with the project supervisor and also through an interim assessment which will consist of a short presentation to the project assessor(s) and supervisor followed by an interview.

Summative assessment:

Dissertation (6,000 words) (80%)

Project conference and poster session (20%)
