This programme aims to develop the student’s interest in and knowledge and understanding of Advanced Composite materials and their potential applications.
All students recruited to the programme will already have an MSc/BSc/MEng/BEng undergraduate degree in one of the core disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mathematics or Engineering, and the MRes programme of study will build on this foundation.
The achievement of the MRes level is implicit in the award of the PhD from the CDT programme and is not explicitly awarded unless students elect to exit the CDT programme early, before completion of their PhD. The MRes programme is therefore an exit award at the 12 month checkpoint of an integrated 4-Year PhD programme run by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Composites Science, Engineering and Manufacturing (CoSEM CDT).
For the first part of the year students will study core competencies in advanced composites, mostly in engineering disciplines (via lecture courses) and extended research development (transferable skills, presentations, literatures surveys) will be undertaken. Specialist competencies in advanced composites will complement the core units, exploring the interface between engineering and science. The final part of the year will comprise a 3-month individual research project.
The MRes is an interdisciplinary training programme that develops students beyond undergraduate H- and M-level taught courses. It will function as a preparatory programme of study and research for a PhD programme, or will enable the successful graduating student to enter industry or commerce with a higher level of training than that obtained from an undergraduate programme.

Statement of expectations from the students at each level of the programme as it/they develop year on year.
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Certificate |
Students are expected to understand the basic concepts of advanced composite analysis, design and manufacture and its realisation in computation, experiment and application, at a level above that of a typical undergraduate course. They are expected to be able to communicate effectively in all areas of science and application of advanced composite materials. They should have an appreciation for the composites field at large, as well as their own place within it. |
---|---|
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Diploma |
In addition to satisfying the M-level Postgraduate Certificate criteria, students are expected to have broader and deeper understanding of the theory and practice of advanced composites, well above the undergraduate level. They will have an expanded range and depth of subject specific knowledge through the study of the units, including hands-on manufacturing skills through the completion of an intensive group design, build and test project. Expertise in the fundamental science of the latest state-of-the-art composite materials is expected, as well as the traditional constituents of composites materials (fibres, resins, cores and adhesives). They are expected to have engaged with primary sources of research and demonstrated their own research potential. They should be able to formulate their own opinions that they can defend in a sound scientific manner. |
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Masters |
In addition to satisfying the M-level Postgraduate Diploma criteria, students are expected to have accomplished independent work at the level of the current state-of-the-art in advanced composites alongside a leading academic in the field. Students at this level will appreciate the demands of modern research and have demonstrated the ability to engage. They are expected to be mature graduate students capable of planning and managing a research project, including conveying results to the international research community.

The assessment of the taught component of a doctoral degree is governed by the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes and is assessed separately from the research project. Progression to the research project may be dependent on the successful completion of the taught component - please refer to the relevant handbook for the structure of the particular programme.
The pass mark set by the University for any level 7(M) unit is 50 out of 100.
It may be possible to exit the programme with a taught award. For detailed rules on progression please see the Regulations and Code of Practice for Research Programmes and the relevant faculty handbook.
Please note: This specification provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if he/she takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided.
