Chemistry with Scientific Computing at Bristol

Scientific computing is an interdisciplinary field that uses computer science, data science and digital technology to solve problems across the field of chemistry.

We will introduce you to coding, software engineering, data analysis and visualisation as well as modern hardware and computing resources, with plenty of opportunities to apply this knowledge to problems in chemistry.

We are the UK's only chemistry-based Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Our state-of-the art labs give you access to industry standard equipment and high-performance computing. You'll also benefit from a hybrid learning model that blends the best of labs, workshops, small group tutorials, and online learning. In class your lecturers will use immediate feedback from you to adapt and respond to your understanding of the material.

Grow your confidence with our dynamic lab manual, which lets you learn at your own pace and try out experiments online before your practical classes.

We also offer Chemistry.

I enjoy the ability to learn chemistry in tandem with computing – the teaching is top-tier and it really excites me for the work I can apply it to after university. Learning how to code and how to apply it to science is amazing to be able to do at undergraduate level.

Marco, BSc Chemistry with Scientific Computing

Career prospects

These degrees recognise that modern chemistry relies increasingly on computers. To address the demand for skilled practitioners in research and industry, we will train a new type of chemist – one with a solid foundation in chemistry, strong skills in computing and the knowledge to combine both to best effect.

You'll graduate with an impressive range of skills including digital, problem-solving, analysis, organisation, presentation and communication skills. Our chemistry careers team will provide you with guidance and support right from the start of your degree. Our careers events will help you to network with alumni and meet representatives from multinational companies, start-up companies, government agencies, and charities.

Career opportunities may include:

  • scientific research
  • chemical industry
  • engineering industry
  • computing
  • data science.

Course structure

The first two years are common to both BSc and MSci courses. You will develop skills in coding, machine learning, high-performance computing, and virtual/augmented reality. You will also study fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and applications in analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

Our BSc course includes a final-year project. Options include working in a research laboratory or addressing a problem faced by researchers in academia, industry or a local school. You might develop science resources, explore computing applications or carry out chemistry education research.

Our MSci course will help you gain a solid foundation for a career in data analysis, the chemical industry or postgraduate study. Your final year of study includes an independent research project in which you will collaborate with academic members of staff who are experts in computing and in chemistry, as well as their research teams, to address a current problem in chemistry.

Interdisciplinary excellence

Bristol is a world-class centre for supercomputing, data science and data-intensive research. Our scientific computing degrees bring together experts from across the University focused on applying the latest computational techniques to major scientific problems, such as changes in the earth's atmosphere, the reactions of molecules or how galaxies are formed.

We have one of the biggest groups of computational chemists in the country with Bristol Scientific Computing (BriSC), which brings together computing experts across the Faculty of Science.
