Scientific computing is an interdisciplinary field that uses computer science, data science and digital technology to solve problems across the field of chemistry. If you love both chemistry and computing and don’t want to choose between the subjects, you can now combine them in our integrated degrees. 

Why study Chemistry with Scientific Computing at Bristol?

Our chemistry with scientific computing degrees combine study of the structure and synthesis of matter with development of computational and data analysis skills.

We are the UK’s only chemistry-based Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Our teaching laboratories are outstanding and our innovative teaching methods include our award-winning Dynamic Laboratory Manual, which enables you to prepare for and learn from practical classes in a unique way. We have one of the biggest groups of computational chemists in the country, along with BriSC (Bristol Scientific Computing), which brings together computing experts across the Faculty of Science.

What kind of student would this course suit?

We will introduce you to coding, software engineering, data analysis and visualization as well as modern hardware and computing resources, with plenty of opportunities to apply this knowledge to problems in chemistry.

How is this course taught and assessed?

These degrees combine study of the structure and synthesis of matter with training in computational and data analysis skills crucial to science and society. You will become an expert in chemistry, with a sound appreciation of scientific computing, allowing you to know what can be achieved by combining these two areas.

The first two years are common to both courses. You will develop skills in coding, machine-learning and high-performance computing. You will study fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and applications in analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

Our BSc course includes a final-year project. Options include working in a research laboratory or addressing a problem faced by researchers in academia, industry, or a local school. You might develop science resources, explore computing applications or carry out chemistry education research.

Our MSci course will help you gain a solid foundation for a career in data analysis, the chemical industry or postgraduate study. Your final year of study includes an independent research project in which you will collaborate with academic members of staff who are experts in computing and in chemistry, as well as their research teams, to address a current problem in chemistry.

What are my career prospects?

These new degrees recognise that modern chemistry increasingly relies on computers. To address the demand for skilled practitioners in research and industry, we will train a new type of chemist - one with a solid foundation in chemistry, strong skills in computing and the knowledge to combine both to best effect.
