Welcome to Bristol

We are working hard to ensure a warm welcome and safe campus for all.

‌Our campus will be open for the new academic term and it’s important to us that you have every opportunity to take part in student life at Bristol, both socially and academically. We’re working hard to make sure you receive the high-quality experience you would expect.

Your safety is our top priority, and we have put appropriate social distancing and hygiene measures in place right across campus.

I trust you will find this information helpful and look forward to welcoming you on campus.

Your experience here in Bristol‌

A student in a study centreWe know how important campus life is. We are proud of ours in the heart of Bristol and everything it offers our students, so we want you to experience as much of it as possible in the next academic year.

We are adapting our spaces - libraries, study spaces, residences, cafes, sports centres and social spaces - in line with social distancing guidelines so you can still enjoy campus life.

We also know those of you who are returning to us will want to meet friends you’ve been distanced from and those new to Bristol will want to meet people from different backgrounds.

A key part of your time at Bristol is also to learn and develop a range of skills, so we are doing all we can to open up opportunities to socialise with course mates and friends, and allow as much face-to-face interaction as social distancing permits.

Your Welcome to Bristol

A student studying in their roomWelcome programmes for new and returning students will start before you even arrive in Bristol. Delivered with Bristol Students’ Union, this will include both online and on-campus activities (guidelines permitting).

The same level of practical support as we usually have will be available to help you settle into university life.

For new students that will include how to open a bank account, how to take care of your wellbeing, and how to join clubs and societies.

For returning students it’ll be reminders about how you can access the support and resources you need to continue your studies.

We’ll also have a range of socially-distanced and online activities for you to take part in, meet people and build your networks

Our Student Communications team will be in touch with you in mid-August to provide details of what’s on offer as part of your welcome programme.

Enhanced safety measures

Face coverings and hand sanitiser will be available to all staff and students, with additional hand washing facilities and enhanced cleaning rosters in place across campus.

Students will have access to swift testing, where appropriate and will be supported to isolate safely if living in University accommodation.

Your on-campus teaching and research experience

Student working on a circuit boardLearning and supervision in small groups, seminars and tutorials is a key feature of the Bristol learning experience. We are committed to continuing to offer this genuine experience for all students, which means that you will receive a blend of online learning and in-person teaching when you come to Bristol next academic year.

We will commence teaching in October for most undergraduate courses, applying the relevant social distancing and hygiene measures to assure the safety of students. Start dates for some professional programmes and postgraduate (taught and research) students may be different.

Importantly, you will talk to your lecturers and fellow students regularly, undertake group work and receive the world-class teaching and guidance you would expect from a Bristol education.

If you are a research student, your supervisor will be in touch with you directly to talk through the approach that best suits your needs and to identify how your research can be undertaken, safely.

Accommodation

Students in Goldney Hall kitchenSafe and supportive quarantine measures, social distancing and capacity restrictions will allow our shared living, study and social spaces within our accommodation to remain open.

Read our advice if you’re returning to Bristol to live in private rented accommodation.

For students who are travelling to Bristol from other countries and need to quarantine for two weeks, you can be quarantined comfortably and safely in our accommodation. We are also making plans for airport collections and other travel arrangements to ensure you are well supported.

Important information

Given the changing nature of the pandemic, our commitments are subject to the guidelines that may be in place at the time. For example, if restrictions are increased/eased in the future then facilities and services may not be delivered as described.
