Centre for Gender and Violence Research: CGVR 30@2020
2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Centre for Gender and Violence Research. Throughout that time we have worked to produce rigorous and ethical knowledge about all forms of gender based violence: Domestic and Sexual Violence; so-called ‘Honour’ Based Violence; Forced Marriage; Bride Price; Child Sexual Exploitation; Prostitution; Pornography; and wider Gender Inequalities. Our focus, now as then, was to:
Recognise Contexts - Challenge Perpetrators - Raise the voice of Victims-Survivors
Despite being part of the changing policy landscape of GBV in the UK and beyond, and contributing evidence that forms part of Survivor Social Movements, illustrated recently in #MeToo and #Timesup, we still find that the fundamental questions of the Centre are still relevant.
· Why does gender and sexuality matter?
· When do multiple inequalities silence some Victims-Survivors?
· How do we hold individual and state perpetrators to account?
This conference will address these questions with reference to the research conducted by the Centre over recent years. It will provide evidence to show how the work of the Centre, and the founding questions which gave rise to it, are still relevant today. It will focus on the challenges to come as we continue to shine a spotlight on how Gender Based Violence operates in societies across the World.
