Abstract:
Many African countries pride themselves and boasts of practicing democracy and good governance without truly appreciating the dogmas and imperatives of democracy. They easily claim to be democratic and yet do little for democratic dividends to be translated into tangible outcomes in the living conditions of the people. Consequently, some African indigenes have described democracy as an alien and incompetent governance system that is incapable of dealing with the major issues of under-development in Africa. Using the Lincolnean definition of democracy as a taxonomy, this lecture assessed the strengths and deficits of democratic governance in Africa and offers some proactive suggestions to safeguard democratic relapse in Africa.
