ABSTRACT
Thinkers with Jewish backgrounds, of all sorts, have done most to provide us with the grammar with which we think about nationalism. The paper traces different theories and relates them to different social backgrounds. This mapping exercised is followed by critical comments, designed to ask about the quality of the thought examined.
