Dr Judi Kidger has been awarded an NIHR Public Health Programme grant of £1.3 million to investigate teacher mental health.
Judi Kidger will be the PI, with several co-investigators across SSCM, and the Universities of Cardiff, Exeter and LSHTM.
The study will take place in twenty four secondary schools in Bristol and Cardiff. It is an evaluation of an intervention that makes use of Mental Health First Aid training to provide i) mental health support for secondary school teachers via a confidential peer support service and ii) training for teachers in supporting vulnerable students. It will measure the impact of the intervention on wellbeing, as well as teacher depression, absence and under performance at work, and student wellbeing, mental health difficulties, attendance and attainment.
The title is: "A cluster randomised controlled trial of an intervention to improve the mental health support and training available to secondary school teachers – the WISE (Wellbeing in Secondary Education) project".
The study started in December 2015 and will finish in April 2019.
