Increased Hydraulic Conductance of Dentine

• patent tubules at dentine surface

  • removing smear layer increases response to hydrodynamic stimuli in cats
  • difficult to explain increased sensitivity to cold
  • occluding tubules reverses hypersensitivity in man

• maybe tubule contents changed

• increases response of hydrodynamic receptors to a stimulus

• allows oral toxins access to pulp

  • increased pulpal tissue fluid pressure will tend to oppose this effect
