Research interests
I graduated in Pharmacy in Taipei Medical University (Taiwan) and qualified as a pharmacist in 2008. I came to the UK in 2009 to undertake an MSc Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, where I completed a research project investigating potential inhibitory mechanisms of a cholesterol synthesis enzyme in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using a small chemical as probes and protein crystallography with Dr Ali Ryan and Professor Edith Sim. Although I was tempted by fundamental research, I decided to focus on translational research, partially driven by my role as health professional.
In 2010, I was awarded a fully funded Swire scholarship to support my DPhil research in the laboratory of Professor Keith Dorrington and Peter Robbins in the University of Oxford. In my main project, I was investigating whether reducing the vasoconstriction in the lungs of people aged 50-80 years can improve their ability to exercise and the relation to the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway. The results of this double-blind, randomised controlled study demonstrated the ability of intravenous iron to affect pulmonary arteries during exercise and provided future research directions.
In 2016, I moved to Bristol and to start a career in research synthesis in the team of Professor Julian Higgins. I have conducted systematic reviews of interventions in a range of topics including alcohol use disorder, peripheral arterial disease and surgical site infection. I am determined to improve patient and public health by identifying, appraising and synthesising available evidence. I am also keen to improve the systematic review process (e.g. ROB 2 Excel tool and automated snowballing searches), trial designs and data visualisation.
I help deliver teaching modules related to systematic reviews and evidence-based medicine. Outside of the University, I am a UK-registered pharmacist working in the community and a trustee for Age UK Bristol. I am keen on sports, mainly long-distance running at this moment.
